Though many varieties of grape will happily grow and fruit outside, its true to say that all varieties will perform even better under protection - a greenhouse, conservatory, polytunnel or similar. Herewith we list the best grape vine varieties for growing under protection in the UK. As trailing climbers, grape vines will require support, with your average greenhouse suited to housing just one grape vine.
If you're considering growing grapes indoors, then you'll be faced with two basic options - growing your indoor grapes in a large pot or container, and keeping your grape vine rather more compactly, or planting your grape vine in the ground outside of your greenhouse or glasshouse, and training the stems into the greenhouse and the warmer internal climate. More...
Growing grapes indoors or under protection is not as difficult as you might first perceive. There are two basic methods that you can try, each with its own benefits and intricacies. But before you decide which method of growing grapes under protection is best for you, you need to decide whether you're going to grow your grape vines in a pot or container.
We supply both potted and bare root grape vines, and depending on the time of year we'll supply you with grafted or cutting-produced vines, which can basically be treated in the same way. But if you're keen to keep your grape vine in a pot, then we highly recommend that you maintain the vine to a fairly compact plant, or grow it as a standard. This is because a larger vine will require much more water than the potted roots and limited soil volume can hold and use.
For grape vines that are planted into the ground but grown under protection, you'll need to decide whether you wish to plant the roots inside or outside the greenhouse, glasshouse, conservatory or polytunnel. Planting the grape vine inside the protected growing space is the easiest option, but will ultimately mean that the vine requires greater care with regular watering, some feeding and mulching as the plant will be protected from all the elements - including rainfall! Planting the vine's roots outside and trailing in via a small opening will initially be more labour-intensive, but will make maintaining the plant a lot easier in the long-run.
Whatever your chosen method of growing grapes under protection, you can be assured that we've taken the time to choose some of the best tasting grape vine varieties available. Growing grapes indoors of course allows you to explore and choose from a wider variety of grapes that can be grown in our relatively mild but unpredictable climate, and increases the chances of a successful yield as damage from frost is dramatically reduced.
We supply our grape vines directly from Victoriana Nursery Gardens in Kent, and supply some helpful growing advice alongside every order to help you maximise your yields. We're also happy to answer questions from our customers, so if you've purchased a grape vine from us and need a little extra help with growing or pruning, feel free to call or send us an email via our contact page.
