Description

This is an extremely sweet, non bitter kale with the huge benefit that it does not grow huge. It doesn't require support and is perfect for growing in containers.

Left to its own devices it will grow to around 2 feet (60 cm) tall with a similar spread, though it takes well to being harvested as a cut-and-come-again crop.

Use raw in salads, steam or stir fry.

Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects if allowed to 'go over' and flower (so if you have room leave any plants in that have gone too far rather than pulling them out straight away).

  • Sow ¾" (2 cm) deep in modules or small pots from March-June.
  • When large enough to handle plant out 2 feet (60 cm) apart in rows 2 feet (60 cm) - unless you are planning to grow as a cut-and-come-again crop in which case you can plant as close as 4" (10 cm) apart in the row.
  • Harvest late autumn-early spring.
  • Top Tips
  • Kale is staggeringly hardy, withstanding temperatures as low as 5°F (-15°C) so can be left in the ground all winter long.
  • Protect from pigeons - pigeons love Brassicas (so do partridges)
  • Take precautions against the dreaded Cabbage White Butterfly - inspect your crop regularly, spray with our BioFriend Plant Defence or use a physical barrier such as insect netting.
