More Than A Little Warm...
So the weather finally broke in July - and when it did, it really did! What a month it has been!
At times it has been a struggle to keep on top of the watering and, despite much being automated we still reckon something like 65 hours a week has been spent on watering. And of course those 65 hours spent on watering has meant the same amount of time has not be spent on other jobs - which means we're just a little behind in some places!
But no matter, the rise in temperature has meant everything has come on leaps and bounds. At the beginning of July the veg garden was looking a little sparse - at the beginning of August is is positively bursting!
The same goes for our extended flower area. We were beginning to worry that it wasn't going to fill out - then all of a sudenn...
And in our veg tunnel the tomatoes and chillies that were so slow earlier in the year have more than made up in size and are positively groaning with fruit.
And then there is the soft fruit - what a bumper year it is! We've never had so many raspberries, currants and hybrid berries, and even the young plants growing in the field for lifting and dispatch are hanging heavy with fruit.
Compared to this time last year, we'd say plants have now caught up and are perhaps even two weeks ahead.
It just goes to show that even in a bad Season (and late Winter, Spring and early Summer as nothing else) one shouldn't give up! Nature always catches up and puts things right!
