How To Sow & Grow Chilli Peppers & Sweet Peppers

For Growing Under Protection

  • Sow under protection in pots March to April.
  • Water thoroughly and germinate at a temperature of 75°F (24°C).
  • When seed leaves are developed reduce temperature to around 65° - 70°F (18° - 21°C).
  • Pot on into tubs or growbags when plants are around 8" (20 cm) tall, three plants per growbag or one plant per 10" (25 cm) pot.

For Growing Outside

  • Sow under protection in pots April.
  • Water thoroughly and germinate at a temperature of 75°F (24°C).
  • When seed leaves are developed reduce temperature to around 65° - 70°F (18° - 21°C).
  • Harden plants off late May / early June and set out into a well drained but moisture retentive soil 2 feet (60 cm) apart in rows 3 feet (90 cm) apart.
  • Protect young plants with cloches or windbreaks if weather is cold and poor.

Top Tips

  • Protect newly sown seeds from mice. Mice are notorious in 'sniffing out' seed of this nature.
  • Water regularly to keep the soil just moist at all times, avoiding both drought and water logging.
  • Whilst plants will tolerate temperatures as low as 55°F (13°C), fruiting will be better at temperatures above 65°F (18°C). At temperatures above 90°F (32°C) fruiting will reduce.
  • Provide support for plants as crops can prove heavy; this may involve individual supports for individual stems.
  • Fruits can be cut and used when immature or left to mature on the plant.
  • Fruits that are left on the plant will be hotter.
  • Chilli Peppers are actually perennial in habit and the plants can be over-wintered at a temperature of 55° - 60°F (13° - 18°C) for cropping in future years should you wish.

Hi Victoiana Nursery, Further to my phonecall, I want to put in writing my gratitude to you for the wonderful services you gave me over the past few weeks. I came to you in desperation because I had planned to make a potager with plenty of fruit trees and vegatables and herbs and roses all growing together on a small back garden. Unfortuately I had not realised that this was heavy clay. It was not until I started planting the roses and discovered no water drained away that I panicked and realised that I had to rethink my ideas. What's more what could I do with the fruit trees that were coming from other nurseries? To add to my chagrin, a gardener whose fruit trees had inspired me mentioned pollinators! These were essential he said. That was when I found you. I phoned up several times and you always talked me through the problem, not once but several times, even on a busy day with such patience and understanding. I received 5 more trees from you and they arrived quickly and in excellent condition, having been carefully packed. How I wished I had found you earlier. The fruit trees I had from another nursery had come damaged as they were packed in long cardboard boxes with blue nylon tape around the top and bottom which made handy grab handles except it sliced throuhg the boxes and guess what damaged the plants (I was compensted for that I may add in fairness). In the meantime, I have had to put my plants in enormous pots and although I don't have the pretty potager I wanted, your fruit trees may be coming into bloom soon. I shall certainly be recommending you to others. Thank you so much. If I manage to transform my 'moonscape' (due to the drainage work I have had to undertake) I shall certainly use you again.
