It is no coincidence that the youngest team member here at Victoriana is just 6 years old! As both a business and a family, since Jeremy’s parents encouraged him to pick up a trowel in the 1930s, for four generations we have been at the forefront of encouraging young hands into the garden. In fact, our motto is that “if they grow it, they’ll eat it” – something that we (and many others) have discovered to be spot on!

Whilst it is fair to say that learning to grow your own food is a valuable life skill, it should never be forgotten that gardening can also be a lot of fun. In particular, gardening with children is a wonderfully enjoyable way for families at home, schools and community groups to discover new skills. And we’re not just talking about growing vegetables, as any child will tell you, pretty things are important too!

True to form, here at Victoriana we are involved in a number of initiatives with schools, running children’s gardening clubs and children’s gardening days alongside our ‘Scarecrow Club’ scheme. For instance, in 2009 we co-designed “A World Outside the Classroom” show garden at BBC Gardener’s World Live, with the aim of demonstrating just how achievable and frugal a school kitchen garden can be.
