Lemon Grass Seed 'East Indian'Cymbopogon citratus

Also known as Barbed Wire Grass, Silky heads, Citronella Grass, Cha de Dartigalongue, Fever Grass, Tanglad, Hierba Luisa or Gavati Chaha. Please be careful with the leaves as you could cut your fingers if you 'stroke' it!
Lemon grass is often used in Thai and Asian cooking and is an excellent complimentary herb to fish as it has a subtle citrus flavour.
- Perennial.
- Reaches 6 feet (1.8 metres) tall.
- Greenish flowers with reddish tinge that appear in nodding clusters in Summer.
- Prefers moist soil.
- Prefers full sun.
- Sow late January to March onto seed compost and very lightly cover.
- Germinate at 70 - 75°F (20 - 25°C), keep seeds moist and they should germinate in 21 - 40 days.
- When large enough to handle, transplant into 3" (7cm) pot.
- Plant out late Spring 12" (30 cm) apart.
- Protect from frost.
- Culinary Uses.
- Can be infused for tea.
- Often used in soups and curries.
- Medicinal Uses.
- Can be used as a relaxant in baths.
- Has anti fungal properties.
- The oil, in ancient India it was used as a preservative.
- Other Uses.
- Sometimes added to soaps and perfumes.
