It has been cultivated in India for hundreds of years! It was once thought to offer protection against evil spirits.
- Half-hardy annual.
- Can reaches 18" (45 cm) high.
- Likes a sunny, sheltered position.
- Prefers well drained, rich soil.
- Rounded, spoon shaped, fleshy green leaves.
- Thick stems.
- Has small yellow flowers.
- For a constant supply, sow continuously each month from Spring until mid-Summer.
- Sow in rows 12" (30 cm) apart and thin seedlings to 4 - 6" (10 - 15 cm) apart.
- Water well.
- Harvest 6 - 8 weeks later.
- Can be grown in pots.
- Culinary Uses.
- You can pickle the leaves in vinegar.
- Cooked with sorrel it is a traditional ingredient for Soupe bonne femme (in France).
- Excellent in hot or cold salads.
- Used in oriental cooking.
- Medicinal Uses.
- Rich in Vitamin C.
- Has diurectic properties.
