Description

Sometimes also known as the Medicine Plant, Medicine Aloe, True Aloe, Burn Plant, Cape Aloe, Socotrine, House Leek, Sea Houseleek and Sea-ay-green.

Virtually every anti-ageing cream and potion on the market claims to contain Aloe Vera in some form or another. And with very good reason as its moisturising and skin nourishment properties are legendary. So why not use 100% pure Aloe Vera gel fresh from your own growing plant?

Aloe Vera gel has been found to provide virtually instant relief to burnt or scalded skin as well as sunburn - and actually aids in the healing process. Simply slice part of the leaf in half and use the gel inside.

Similarly, Aloe Vera has been found to be extremely effective in the treatment of leg and skin ulcers, as well as eczema, acne, cuts, and skin abrasions, and has natural antiseptic properties.

And don't forget your pet: Aloe Vera is excellent for relieving itching and scratching from flea bites and other skin complaints.

  • Likes a full sun position, will tolerate light shade.
  • Needs a frost-free position, a minimum of 5°C (41ºf).
  • Require a well drained compost.
  • Keep on the moist side of dry through the summer, and the dry side of moist during the winter.
  • Can reach 2ft (60cm) in height.
  • We would suggest keeping your Aloe Vera plant indoors.
  • Easy to use - simply cut a small piece of the leaf off and split it open. The gel can be used straight from the leaf.
  • Always pot on during the late spring/summer months, first allowing the plant to full dry out for a week or two before potting on.
  • Divide/repropagate from offsets by cutting them off with a sharp knife in July/August. Allow to dry in the sun for a week then pot into moist gritty compost. Plants can grow large so pot on as they grow. You will see that the plant also produces 'pups' (baby plants) that can be potted on.
  • If allowed to bloom the Aloe Vera flower is actually quite pretty; an orange/pink/yellow bell-shaped flower on a long stem (a little like an orchid).

Medicinal Uses

  • The gel can be used to treat sunburn, scalds, eczema and cuts.
  • For leg ulcers, mix the gel with icing sugar, apply to the wound and protect with dry lint. We recommend that you do this twice a week for a few weeks - during the third week you should only need to use the dry sugar.
  • For cuts and bruises use the gel without covering the affected areas.
  • Use as a juice (but please check dilution rates) to counter digestive problems (such as irritable bowel, colitis and constipation), colds, flu, Asthma or Bronchitis, mix the gel with luke warm water and add honey or glucose.
  • For thrush, nappy rash, wrinkles or skin complaints apply the gel directly.
  • Added to shampoo can be used as an anti-dandruff shampoo and will relieve dry, itchy scalps.
  • General tonic for immune system.
