A really bright and cheerful, some would say simple flower; crimson red flowers have a distinctive black blotch at the base of each - looking like the spots on a ladybird. Grow to around 2ft - 3ft tall. Strictly speaking these are perennial in habit, though are often grown as an annual as they can be a little tender - especially with our wet Winters. If left in place they will of course self seed as well as some plants making it through - so treat them as a perennial (provided they are grown away from other poppies they will set seed quite true to type.) Please Note: Cultivation of Papaver somniferum is legal in the UK - the harvesting and processing of it for the production of drugs, legal or otherwise, is not Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.
