We think the name 'Stinking Hellebore' is actually unfair as while the fragrance from the flowers is strong it is not unpleasant and often likened to the perfume of Mahonia flowers.

Named after the famous garden designer, Gertrude Jekyll, what stands this apart from many other Hellebore species is the fine divisions to its leaves. But the real beauty is the pale green flowers with their delicate purple lips that appear shortly after Christmas (and can stay until April).

This really is a very pretty plant and a delight to have in the garden.

  • Thrive in partial shade but will also perform well in either deeper shade or sun.
  • Prefer a moist but well drained soil and are particularly good on alkaline soils.
  • Flower from January to April.
  • Grow to a height of around 2 - 3 feet (60 - 80 cm).

Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.

Supplied as compost block grown plants.

How do, team? We saw our first copy of Home Farmer last month with an article on Manchester City Council reviewing its approach to allotments and I wrote an article in response. Not been able to get hold of a copy of the following edition anywhere and as we currently live the literal Good Life, are not able to subscribe yet. Good to know you are out there somewhere though. We are getting bookings for poultry care, healthy eating and green exercise sessions from schools, social housing landlords and residents groups, so things are picking up, but I do want to continue to explore new approaches to inner-city growing, poultry and bee-keeping as we work our way out of this recession. Indeed, we need joined up approaches that ensure that farming takes its rightful place as a leading ethical lifestyle that is affirmed and cherished instead of clinicised to death. Good Wishes you all.
