Savoy cabbages are quite simply fantastic

Probably the hardiest of all the cabbage family these will thrive in a cold damp Winter and will withstand lower temperatures than most other crops, making them the perfect Winter standby vegetable.

Some people are put off growing and eating cabbage because of their experiences of soggy cabbage served up at school; Savoy cabbages will restore their faith - crunchy and full of flavour this is a vegetable that can be prepared in oh so many ways from the plain and simple to the gourmet. Shredding finely and pan frying in butter, a splash of white wine and finishing with grated nutmeg makes a fantastically simple gourmet dish.

Once again we have carefully blended a selection of Savoy cabbage varieties which will provide a successive harvest and get over the all 'coming at once' problem attached with growing just one variety.

Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects if allowed to 'go over' and flower (so if you have room leave any plants in that have gone too far rather than pulling them out straight away).

  • Sow from April to May thinly in rows 6" (15 cm) apart. Sow in ½" (1 cm) deep drills.
  • Thin to one seedling per 3" (7.5 cm) or transplant into suitable pots.
  • Set out when large enough 18" (45 cm) apart in rows 18" (45 cm) apart.
  • Harvest approximately November - February.
  • Top Tips
  • Whilst Savoy cabbages grow well in a rich soil, too rich a soil or overfeeding will make them less hardy and more susceptible to frost damage.
  • Protect from Pigeons - Pigeons love Brassicas (so do Partridges).
  • Take precautions against the dreaded Cabbage White Butterfly - inspect your crop regularly, spray with our BioFriend Plant Defence or use a physical barrier such as insect netting.

Supplied as a packet of approximately 100 seeds.
