Originating from the Northeast of India this Chilli is known under a variety of names depending on the province grown; whilst not an exhaustive list, it is also known as...

  • 'Bhut Jolokia' (which translates as 'Ghost Chilli')
  • 'Bih Jolokia' (which translates as 'Poison Chilli')
  • 'Borbih Jolokia'
  • 'Nagahari'
  • 'Naga Jolokia' (extreme heat representing the aggressive temperament of the warriors of the neighbouring Naga community)
  • 'Raja Chilli'
  • 'Raja Mircha' (which translates as 'King of Chillies')

Extensive research and DNA testing by Frontal Agritech and The Chilli Pepper Institute (CPI) of New Mexico State University have proven all of the above to be the same variety.

Whatever you choose to call this Chilli, it is devastatingly hot; but to be doubly sure that you are getting the hottest of the hottest we only produce our seed from mother plants produced from Chilli Pepper Institute seed.

This Chilli needs to be treated with the utmost respect at all times - even the seeds can cause burns when sowing! The immature green pods are fiery hot - but once they mature to red they are literally blistering and even the tiniest amount of cut flesh touched on to human skin can cause agony. Again we must emphasise respect must be used at all times and this certainly is not a chilli to use in practical jokes.

So apart from being a novelty, does it actually have a purpose? The simple answer is yes - as amongst all that heat it also has a wonderful citrus smoke flavour. Our friends at our local Indian restaurant tell us this is a much coveted variety and would far happier cook with a tiny amount of this than a whole 'cooler' chilli. We have successfully (and safely) used this chilli in cooking at home for a number of years now and made some staggeringly spicy Chilli Jam for the past few years. And so, if treated with care, we recommend this as a variety that is both rewarding and attractive to grow.

The pale green fruits have a crinkled appearance and mature to a rich red, measuring 2" - 3½" (5 - 8 cm) in length and 1" - 1½" (2.5 - 4 cm) in diameter (at the shoulder) tapering to a point. The plant has a fairly dense habit growing to approximately 2 - 3 feet (60 - 90 cm) and a similar spread.

  • Origin: India
  • Heat: Volcanic

Cautions / Disclaimer

Based on the fact Bhut Jolokia regularly scores at over 1,000,000 SHU's (Scoville Heat Units) and has been recorded as hot as 1,041,427 SHU's - making it 200 times hotter than a regular Jalapeno Chilli we once again caution those who purchase seed of this that it must treated with respect at all times and under no circumstances must the fruits be used in practical jokes etc. We accept no liability, consequential or otherwise, whatsoever to those who chose to grow, handle or eat this variety - or similarly to any third party who is injured as a result of contact in any way, shape or form. Your purchase of this seed implies you have read and accepted this condition of sale.
