Kohl Rabi Seed - Purple, Green & Giant

An excellent Summer, Autumn and early Winter vegetable and extremely popular in Germany.

In appearance purple and green tennis ball sized swollen stems sit above the ground. Whilst they can be eaten raw we prefer them gently steamed. They have a mild and sweet flavour. These should be better known!

These grow extremely quickly; cropping can be just 8 weeks from sowing.

Just for fun we shall also include within the packet a small packet of the enormous growing variety Superschmelz - slow growing, does not run to seed, not course or stringy - just produces huge Kohl Rabi up to 8 kilos in weight.

Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects if allowed to 'go over' and flower (so if you have room leave any plants in that have gone too far rather than pulling them out straight away).

• For Early Crops
• Sow in modules or small pots 1" (2.5 cm) deep, March - April and germinate and grow on under protection.
• Plant out when large enough to handle 9" (23 cm) in rows 12" (30 cm) apart.

• For Later Crops
• When ground has warmed up sow thinly in rows 12" (30 cm) apart and ½" (1 cm) deep.
• Thin to 9" (23 cm) apart when large enough to handle.

• Top Tips
• Best crops are grown in alkaline soils, so lime ground before sowing / planting if necessary.
• Avoid planting outside or sowing outside until temperature is above 50°F (10°C) to prevent bolting.
• Ensure the crop is kept well watered as if they dry out they can become woody.
• Protect from Pigeons - Pigeons love Brassicas (so do Partridges).
• Take precautions against the dreaded Cabbage White Butterfly - inspect your crop regularly, spray with our BioFriend Plant Defence or use a physical barrier such as insect netting.
