In Japan this popular vegetable is a real Winter favourite due to its excellent cold resistance. Whilst the Japanese do use it in stir fry's it is also widely pickled.

The mass of green serrated leaves can be added to salads or used in stir fry's - in both cases they add a mild mustard piquancy.

Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects if allowed to 'go over' and flower (so if you have room leave any plants in that have gone too far rather than pulling them out straight away).

  • Sow thinly April - September in drills ¾" (2 cm) deep in rows 12" (30 cm) apart - or thinly in containers.
  • For use as a cut and come again leaf crop thin to 4" (10 cm) apart.
  • For eating 'whole' thin to 12" (30 cm) - but remember to eat the thinnings!
  • For over Winter crops sow under protection, in the same manner, from August - mid October.

Supplied as a packet of approximately 180 seeds.

I don't normally do this (perhaps I should!) but I wanted to let you know how pleased I was with the fruit bushes, etc. They arrived this morning and after undoing the excellent packing I was impressed with how strong and healthy the plants were. I have spent a very pleasant spring day heeling everything in. So thanks once again for your prompt and efficient service - I look forward to my first crop of soft fruit this summer and for many years to come!! Regards, Lynn Cadman
