First introduced in 1915, this Second Early variety produces vivid purple-blue skinned potatoes; within the flesh is bright white and floury in texture - almost to the point of being dry.

To serve this as a boiled potato is virtually impossible as when boiling it goes from hard to collapse at the 'blink of an eye' - but for mashing, roasting, frying and sautéing it is wonderful.

  • Chit tubers by placing 'eye face up' in egg boxes or shallow trays and standing in a warm light location.
  • Once small green shoots (or chits) appear move to a cooler location for a few weeks before planting out.
  • Best planted out mid March - April. Later plantings will be fine but yield may be smaller.
  • Dig trenches approximately 6" (15 cm) deep and  2½ feet (75 cm) apart.
  • Press tubers into the base of the trench 18" (45 cm) apart with chits facing up and cover with 1" (2.5 cm) of soil.
  • Water in and keep the crop well watered in dry spells.
  • When the haulm (top growth of the plants) reaches 9" (23 cm) earth up around the plants leaving just the top 4" (10 cm) showing - repeat again later if required.
  • Potatoes should be ready for harvest approximately 15 - 17 weeks after planting.

Supplied as 1 Kg (to the nearest potato) of certified seed potatoes.

HI We purchased apple tree James Grieve on the 05/03/2009. We must tell you how pleased we are, it has already developed a nice shape, and has produced 22 well formed apples we are amazed. The tree was value for money. We wish you all well.
