We always held in admiration both the marketing and presentation of 'Jersey Royal' Potatoes for early cropping - but best of all flavour. Forest Gold is our own re-selection, which we believe to be an improvement on Jersey Royals, derived from International Kidney.

Our name embraces the practice we make of using composted bark that effectively becomes the 'forest floor' or soil. We recommend this method, especially as composted bark is a natural organic harmless barrier to slugs. These can be grown both as a salad crop or allowed to grow on to produce a large floury potato that bakes, fries, mashes and sautés well. Particularly good for growing in large pots or tubs.

  • Chit tubers by placing 'eye face up' in egg boxes or shallow trays and standing in a warm light location.
  • Once small green shoots (or chits) appear move to a cooler location for a few weeks before planting out.
  • Best planted out mid March - April. Later plantings will be fine but yield may be smaller.
  • Dig trenches approximately 6" (15 cm) deep and 2 feet (60 cm) apart.
  • Press tubers into the base of the trench 12" (30 cm) apart with chits facing up and cover with 1" (2.5 cm) of soil.
  • Water in and keep the crop well watered in dry spells.
  • When the haulm (top growth of the plants) reaches 9" (23 cm) earth up around the plants leaving just the top 4" (10 cm) showing - repeat again later if required.
  • Potatoes should be ready for harvest approximately 10 - 15 weeks after planting.

Supplied as 1 Kg (to the nearest potato) of certified seed potatoes.

Quick note to say plants arrived safely yesterday, are already potted up and basking in the greenhouse. I've had to purchase my tomatoes online for yrs, never been wholly satisfied with them when they arrived - usually spindly things that need a lot of faffing to get going. But these are amazing! At last, found a decent seller! Thank you. Kind regards.
