It is often thought that this variety was first brought to England by the Romans (something they did do for us) and has since naturalised in some parts of the UK. Thought to be a sport of Pinot Noir, in hardiness it is superior and copes with our climate better as it buds later but ripens earlier. It is a lovely eating grape with rich purple-black fruits. As a wine grape it could arguably be described as 'the secret grape' - despite being one of the most widely planted varieties in France it rarely gets a mention; up until recently this has been most notable in Champagne with most producers almost denying its use, preferring to emphasise the use of the 'more noble' Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. As it is now being recognised as contributing to the body and richness of Champagnes it is now starting to get more recognition - about time!
