A Proper Autumn!

Looking back at records, the past few Novembers have been mild, wet and windy - sometimes all three! But this year sharp frosts overnight have been followed by dry, crisp and sunny days - with a breathtaking sunset to finish off each day. A proper Autumn. A perfect Autumn!

Here on the nursery the dry weather has made for the perfect lifting season - and for the gardener its making for the perfect time for planting bare root fruit and hedging! And instead of struggling to find things to do indoors in previous years (because of rain everyday) we've even been bale to crack on and start digging over the veg garden - and those frosts will help to break it up over the Winter.

So now is the time to plan your Autumn and Winter plantings. The sooner your plants are ordered the sooner you will have them and be able to get them in; another job done before Winter really kicks in!

For many (including a magazine or two), Autumn is thought of as the 'end of the gardening season' but in reality it isn't - its just a time when we change what we are eating fresh from the garden. Surely your first Parsnip or Jerusalem Artichoke from the garden is just as exciting as the first Asparagus or Sweetcorn? Of course, if the supermarkets had it all their way that joy would have long gone - with their policies of all year round availability of everything!

So, in the gardening calendar things may slow down a little bit just now - but its also time to plan for the new year ahead. Without wishing the year away, it wont be too long until Christmas Day afternoon - the traditional time for sowing onions. So relax a little, but not too much!

Be sure to follow all our antics at the nursery on Twitter or Facebook for daily updates and general banter posted with a grin.
