    Annual Pumpkin Competition 2012

A bit of fun for local children and the staff at Victoriana!

Every year Victoriana grows thousands of young pumpkin plants from seed.

Victoriana contacted approximately twelve local pre-school, primary school or children's clubs this year, who decided to take part and when the plants were ready (just before their May holidays) the plants were collected and distributed to the children (the cost for this is covered by us and our Scarecrow Club members).

The children took home the pumpkin plants and planted them! They each cared for their plant (probably with a little adult help!) and watched them grow. Each year we hear different stories of what the children have done to try and make their pumpkin grow bigger than everyone else's. Some sing or talk to them, some even take photos and make a diary, or plant their pumpkin on a pile of horse poo!

Pumpkin Competition 2012 St Simons Primary School JudgingIn October Stephen and Serena visited the schools and clubs to judge the pumpkin fruits that had been produced and award prizes to the winners! Prizes were awarded for the largest, smallest, ugliest, oddest shape, best carved (or whatever else was appropriate!)

This year the children each grew white pumpkins, a variety called 'Snowman'. Unfortunately due to the poor, cold weather this year numbers weren't as high as usual and many had stories to tell of problems with slugs or dogs. Nonetheless we had pumpkins to judge; you will see from the photos below, some children were quite creative!

In the end the school thst managed to grow the largest pumpkin was Challock - with a massive 91.5cm circumference, but the school that had the highest return of pumpkins for the number of plants they had was Challock Pre-School which did exceptionally well - they had a return rate of 24%, (please bear in mind that as with all schools, children who have plants leave each year, in the pre-schools case this was well over half!)

So this year's overall winner is Challock Pre-School, who win a £50 gift voucher to spend on growing projects for their children in the next 12 months. We will ensure that this reaches them so that their children can continue to grow their 'little green fingers!'

Don't forget this competition will run again next year so if you would like to take part, please contact us! In the meantime here are some photos of the pumpkins we saw this year!
