Description

As much as we love 'Green Globe', we have to say this is a much improved selection; not an F1 Hybrid or genetically modified, these are seed grown from rigorous re-selection.

Fast to mature, cropping in the first year from planting is not unusual, with 8 + globes per plant in following years not being unusual. Harvest when immature for pickling or allow to grow to their usual 4" (10 cm) diameter.

Another benefit of 'Tavor' is its improved cold tolerance over the Winter months when the crowns of other varieties can be killed off by prolonged hard frost. This is the variety we grow the most of here on our veg patch; the severe Winter of December 2010 - January 2011 caused no problems - and in the mild December of 2011 we were still harvesting!

Don't forget that Artichokes look just as great in the ornamental garden as they do on the veg patch as they are such a wonderful architectural plant. And allow a 'head' or two to run to flower for a stunning show - and treat for the bees and other beneficial insects!

Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects if allowed to 'go over' and flower (so if you have room leave any plants in that have gone too far rather than pulling them out straight away).

  • Prefer a well drained but moisture retentive soil and a full sun position.
  • Plant out late April onwards.
  • Set plants 3 feet x 3 feet apart (90 cm x 90 cm).
  • Keep weed free.
  • Water well in dry spells.
  • Remove Autumn die back and protect the crowns from frost with straw or similar.
  • Plants are best replaced every 3 - 5 years; to produce young plants from your old simply remove offsets (side shoots) in the Spring.
