Originally from Mexico, the avocado happily grows outdoors in the warmest regions of the Europe and USA. Here in Britain, it needs to be grown in a pot on a sunny patio during the summer months and taken into a frost-protected greenhouse or conservatory in the winter, to protect it from damp and frosts. Unfortunately (like some of us!) these plants don't like to get cold.

When ripe these lovely oval fruits have a deep purple/black outer skin which is 'bumpy'; inside, the smooth creamy/green inner is simply delicious - and with a relatively small to medium-sized stone the flesh to fruit ratio is excellent!

In a container, the avocado reaches a height of 5-7 feet (1.5-2 metres), and it can take up to 10 years for the first fruit to appear. However they usually start to fruit when they are about four years old.  This is a larger fruiting variety (in ideal climates they can reach 200-300g each).

Fruit usually appears 12-18 months after the flowers bloom. Leave the fruits on the tree until the skin turns purple. Fruit will continue to grow larger on the tree but won't ripen until picked.

Avocados are high in healthy fats, vitamins C, E and B, potassium, and folic acid - and very delicious!

  • Reaches 5 -7 feet (1.5 - 2 metres) in height in a container, perhaps larger.
  • Prefers full or partial sunlight.
  • Water when surface of soil is dry to touch.
  • Self-fertile.
  • Fruit won't ripen until removed from tree.
  • Delicious in salads, sandwiches and made into guacamole.
