Description

Every supermarket sells Calabrese and calls it Broccoli which in reality it isn't. We can't see anything wrong with the name Calabrese.

It is an excellent and very versatile vegetable with a far milder taste than purple and white sprouting types - perfect for steaming, stir-fries, gratins and all sorts of things, including eating raw in salads. This vegetable is especially good for freezing and nutritionally rich in vitamins.

We doubt if you can beat our selection, which is repeat sprouting from June until November. A blend of varieties to ensure continued cropping.

Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects if allowed to 'go over' and flower (so if you have room leave any plants in that have gone too far rather than pulling them out straight away).

  • Sow in seed trays from early March until July.
  • Pot on seedlings before planting out.
  • Set out, when hardened off and large enough to handle, 2 feet (60 cm) apart in rows 2 feet (75 cm) apart.
  • Harvest from June - November.

Top Tips

  • Plant firmly, and in windy areas consider staking.
  • Protect from pigeons - they love Brassicas (so do partridges)
  • Take precautions against the dreaded Cabbage White butterfly - inspect your crop regularly, spray with our BioFriend Plant Defence or use a physical barrier such as insect netting.
