Description

This commonly called black chokeberry tends to be more purple!  Produces clusters of small, pink/white flowers that develop into black berries which ripen through red to purple with lovely dark green leaves which turn a dark red/purple in the Autumn, they really are quite stunning.

Fruits can swell to a nice size, similar to that of a blueberry and are quite tart and bitter to taste (hence the name Chokeberry!) however they make delicious jam and jelly as well as pies, juice or wine and with their anti-oxidant and vitamin content are very good for you.

You tend to find that these plants are more native to wetter ground, even boggy.

Birds tend to enjoy these so we recommend that you hang 'sparkly' things in the bushes to deter them.

  • Deciduous.
  • Upright habit.
  • Grow to around 6 feet (2 metres) tall with a spreading and suckering habit.
  • Flower approximately May.
  • Harvest late Summer / Autumn.
  • Thrive in full sun or partial shade.
  • Tolerate moister soils, but not suitable for heavily waterlogged soils.
  • Self Fertile.
