Description

Produces clusters of scented, white flowers that transform into green berries that ripen to black and are a similar size to blueberries. The Chokeberries, being quite tart taken straight from the bush (not that the birds seem to mind!). They make delicious tea, jams and pies full of antioxidants and vitamins.

The foliage on these plants is dark green, but come the Autumn is quite a picture with their colour changing into stunning deep reds before they loose their leaves.

Often found growing in boggy ground but are also drought tolerant, they prefer a free draining position and will grow in salty positions these plants are easy to grow. Whilst the fruit prefers a sunny location to ripen well, they can be grown in a part shade position.

Also known as Aronia berry.

Recognised to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.

  • Hardy.
  • Grow to around 4 feet (120 cm) tall with a spreading and suckering habit.
  • Plant 3 feet (90 cm) apart.
  • Take approximately 3 years before fruiting.
  • Flower May - June.
  • Harvest late Summer / Autumn.
  • Thrive in full sun or partial shade.
  • Tolerate moister soils, but not suitable for heavily waterlogged soils.
  • Self Fertile.
