Description

A stringless, sweet variety of French Bean.

Grow against a trellis or bean poles or even up netting - perhaps interplant with climbing peas or runner beans. They can also be grown as part of the 'three sisters system' to maximise your yield from a small area (the bean plants, climb up the sweetcorn plants) should you wish.

We have found them to defy any Summer drought and remain sugar sweet and tender when cooked; eaten raw they make a tasty and crunchy addition to Summer salads. Great for growing under protection for an early crop.

Blue Lake is also perfect for freezing or drying and the pure white beans used as haricot beans! Very versatile!

An excellent variety to grow in cold greenhouse or polytunnel.

  • For Growing In Rows
  • Support these plants up to a height of around 6 - 8 feet (1.8 - 2.4 metres) using netting, a bamboo cane structure or similar.
  • For Climbing French Bean Wigwams
  • Using a dustbin lid or similar as a template, drive into the ground six, eight foot (2.4 metres) canes and tie them together at the top to produce a wigwam effect.
  • Plant one or two plants at the base of each cane.
  • Top Tips
  • These thrive in warm conditions and so are an ideal crop to growing under protection - greenhouse or polytunnel.
  • Whilst they will prove drought tolerant, good watering from flowering time onwards will ensure maximum pod development.
  • Mulch around the stems in early Summer.
