Our Feedback
I just wanted to thank you for the fantastic service you gave me when I purchased a Ruby Anniversay rose bush from you. I ordered by telephone and spoke to a lady who was very helpful and polite. I received the rose bush in time for my Mum & Dad's anniversary, beautifully looked after and very carefully packaged. My parents loved it. Thank you again for a wonderful service. I will not hesitiate to recommend you to friends and family.

Description

Protect your home and garden with barbed wire security ... without ugly barbed wire. Replace your old rotting fence with this inexpensive and beautiful natural barrier, which our original nursery introduced in 1964.

A select stock of Rosa rugosa, recommended by all garden journalists and magazines, and not to be confused with the Common Briar, Cluster Colourama is the pedigree proven rose that grows thicker and better each year.

From early spring the lush green foliage will encourage further growth from below ground level that, unlike ordinary roses, come true to the parent plant. Throughout the summer it is covered in richlyperfumed large pink, cerise, crimson and white flowers with sun-gold centres. In autumn the lovely golden foliage is complemented by large red hips from which you can make rose hip syrup or jelly, or leave on the plants as they make an excellent autumn food for birds. Can attain its maximum height of 6-7 ft within two years.

Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.

  • Plant 12" (30 cm) apart.
  • Ultimate height 7 feet (2 metres). Can be trimmed to any height above 3 feet (90 cm).
  • Average annual growth rate 2 feet (60 cm).
  • Ultimate width 4 feet (120 cm). Can be trimmed to any width over 2 feet (60 cm).
  • Grows well in most soil types (including chalky and clay) except those prone to laying very wet.
  • Suitable for most aspects from full sun to partial shade. Does not perform well in dense shade.
  • Suitable for coastal areas.
  • Performs well in exposed/windy positions.
  • We are not aware that this plant is poisonous.
  • Plant autumn/winter/early spring.
  • No supports required.

Planting

  • On arrival if roots are dry stand the plants in a bucket of water for no more than half an hour.
  • Ideally plants should be set out as soon as possible; if this is not possible either 'heel' the plants into a shallow trench or alternatively wrap the roots up in the bark chip and polythene they arrived in and store the plants in a cool frost free place - do not keep them in a warm place as they will start to come into growth prematurely. Check every few days that the roots are moist and plant out as soon as is practical.
  • Use ordinary garden soil to plant into (Colourama will grow anywhere grass or weeds will grow!)
  • Ideally choose an open situation; if planting near a wall or fence ensure you plant 15" (38 cm) away.
  • Under no circumstances use any stimulants, fertiliser or bonemeal at planting time as such products will 'burn' any new root growth and actually slow your plants' development!
  • Water thoroughly if the ground is dry.

After Care

  • It is essential to keep your developing hedge free of weeds.
  • In extended dry periods ensure your plants are watered thoroughly at least once a week; this is even more critical on lighter soils.
  • There is no need to spray for black spot or common rose diseases.
  • Once a year, usually in late autumn, it may be necessary to trim your hedge with shears (although we don't tend to every year here at the nursery). Wear gloves as the bristle thorns can be painful.
  • Suckers that arise from below the ground will come true to type, so need to remove!
