Currants - Black, Red & White

Productiveness, longevity and a delightful ornamental for the garden - a blackcurrant bush, redcurrant bush or white currant plant all satisfy these versatile criteria.

Blackcurrant bushes, white currants and redcurrant bushes are all suited to growing in open ground or containers, and prefer a sunny aspect in well-drained soil enriched with well-rotted manure. We supply our currant bushes as bare root plants during the dormant season, and can supply in pots during the warmer spring and summer months too. More...

Just one blackcurrant bush will produce fruit for up to (and sometimes in excess of) twenty years - the same can be expected of the white currant bush and its redcurrant relations too! So if you're looking for a plant that will keep producing the goods year upon year, then one of our currant bushes should definitely be at the top of your list.

A blackcurrant bush, white currant bush and redcurrant bush will require a sunny aspect and well-drained soiled in order to thrive, although they are known to tolerate dappled shade. Digging well-rotted manure into open ground will encourage the plant to thrive, as will regular watering during dry spells. A word of warning though - overwatering currant bushes can result in the berries splitting! Wild birds will also favour the delicately flavoured juicy berries from your currant bushes, so if you're not keen to share, then a fruit cage is ideal. For smaller gardens, we recommend fixing a good quality anti-bird mesh over a smaller tensioned frame to keep your berries safe, and to prevent any injury to your local wildlife.

We supply a selection of self-fertile currant varieties, which is of particular use when growing single plants in containers as pollination partner plants aren't required to produce a berry crop. Our blackcurrant, redcurrant and white currant bushes will generally grow as an open bush, although they are also suited to cordon and wire growing. Feel free to contact us with queries or pruning advice on your blackcurrant, white currant and redcurrant bush order, and we'll be more than happy to advise.

It's also worth noting that we also offer discounts on bulk orders of plants within the same pricing group.
