Description

A European variety of Black Elderberry that produces large quantites of berries later in the Summer season which are full of antioxidants and amino acides.

Commonly grown commercially in Germany and Austria.

Produces dark green, feathery type leaves and an abundance of small white flowers. Can be grown as a hedge or alone.

Also called, Elder, Black Elder, European Elder, European Elderberry, European Black Elderberry, Pipe Tree, Common Elder, Acte, Arn Tree, Boon Tree, Boor Tree, Bore Tree, Bour Tree, Bur Tree.

  • Hardy.
  • Partially self fertile (so a pollinator will increase yield).
  • Fruits approximately August - September.
  • Plant approximately 6 feet (1.8 metres) apart to form a hedge.
  • Reaches 6 - 10 feet (2 - 3 metres) tall and wide but can be mantained at around 5 feet (1.5 metres).
  • Requires watering during Summer months as doesn't like to dry out.
  • Prefers a sunny position but will tolerate partial shade.
  • Deciduous.

  • Great for making cordials, wine, juice or jam from.

  • Medicinal Uses
  • Rich in Vitamin C.
  • The roots can be used to treat bronchitis.
  • Can be used to treat dry coughs, upper respiratory colds and fevers.
  • A tea can be made to help treat fevers.

  • Other Uses
  • Used for making dyes.
  • Contains tannins.
