Available from APPROXIMATELY early JuneOriginated in Spain this variety produces deep blue-black grapes which make a complex but full-bodied red wine; Tempranillo is commonly used to make Rioja.
An early ripening variety compared to other reds that come from Spain, this variety prefers a cooler climate but needs the warmth to get high sugar levels. It prefers a chalky soil. The grapes grow in compact cylindrical bunches ofthick-skinned grapes.
Parentage is thought to be part Pinot Noir from when monks left cuttings at monasteries on their pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela but no genetic connections have been discovered.
