Originated in Spain this variety produces deep blue/black grapes which make a complex but full bodied red wine; Tempranillo is commonly used to make Rioja.

Thick skinned and early ripening compared to other reds that come from Spain. This variety prefers a cooler climate but needs the warmth to get high sugar levels and thick skins, prefers achalky soil. The grapes grow in compact cylindrical bunches.

Parentage is thought to be part Pinot noir from when monks left cuttings at monasteries on their pilgrimages to Santiago de Compostela but no genetic connections have been discovered.

  • Originally from Northern Spain.
  • Parentage: Possibly part Pinot Noir.
  • Early ripening.
  • Can be grown both outdoors or under protection (unless you live in the North of the country where we would recommend protected growing).
  • Self Fertile.
  • Fruits contain seeds.
