Sagina subulata

  • In our opinion the best of all groundcover lawn alternatives!
  • Utterly hardy, excellent drought resistance.
  • Tolerant of fairly heavy foot traffic.
  • Sometimes known as Irish Moss - though, as it flowers, it's not a moss at all!
  • Evergreen.

In our opinion this is the best lawn alternative there is. We have personally seen this growing as far south as a beachside lawn in Athens – where it was baked in the sun and subject to heavy foot traffic – and as far north as Northern Norway - where it was happily putting up with snow, cold and heavy rainfall.

Once established, these need absolutely no attention at all - no trimming or cutting - nothing!

In warm, wet summers it will grow to around 4" (10 cm) tall and become a lovely spongy surface to walk on - whilst in a drier Summer or over the Winter the growth becomes a 'tighter' and more compact 1" (2.5 cm).

Whatever the weather, late spring and early summer will see the lawn covered in a mass of tiny white flowers that later turn into dainty white seed pods that resemble pearls, hence its name – Pearlwort.

This really is a plant we cannot recommend enough!

  • Plant 6" x 6" (15 x 15 cm) apart – that's 36 plants per square metre to metric people (or you can divide up our chunky plug plants and grow on in small pots before planting out).
  • Happy in most soil types (but avoid constantly waterlogged/boggy conditions.
  • Happy in most aspects from full sun to partial shade.
  • Ensure weed growth is kept under control until the lawn is well-established.
  • Will happily take fairly heavy foot traffic, except when the ground beneath is lying very wet.
  • Not suitable for areas where dogs may foul as their mess will kill it where it falls!
  • Evergreen.
  • Drought-tolerant.
Available from approximately April 2018
