Our Feedback
Hi I just wanted to say that this is an excellent site. I ordered seeds (veggies) and organic vegetable growing guide book and all I can say is that the service has been absolutely fantastic. Most seeds are sown and already starting to sprout. The Kitchen Garden leaflet is a fantastic idea. I have copied this and have one in the greenhouse and a spare in the house. I will definately be ordering from you again. Thanks again for everything

Description

Sometimes known as the Trifoliate Orange this was, until recently, known botanically as Citrus trifoliata - yet it is not in fact a Citrus! Adding more confusion is the fact that it is often used as the rootstock for grafted hybrid Citrus varieties.

Putting all this confusion to one side, this non-citrus Citrus is very much underrated and perfect for growing in the garden throughout the year. It is utterly winter-hardy, withstanding temperatures to as low as -20C (-4F) once established (will require winter frost protection for the first 2-3 years).

Grow as a single specimen bush - or plant 2 feet (60 cm) apart and grow as a viciously defensive hedge as the plants are covered in large spiteful thorns.

Whichever way you choose to grow it, your reward will be small (1" (4 cm) diameter) fruits; though too bitter for most people to eat raw, these are perfect for marmalades and preserves. In effect this is the Crab Apple of the citrus world - but of course it isn't a Citrus!

  • Hardy.
  • Self fertile.
  • Prefers a full sun position but will tolerate partial shade.
  • A well-drained, slightly acidic soil is ideal though a more alkaline soil will be fine.
  • Deciduous shrub.
  • Scented flowers.
  • Will reach approximately 4-5 feet (1.2-1.5 metres) after ten years with a spread of around 4 feet (1.2 metres). Ultimately these can grow to around 12 feet (3.6 metres) tall.
  • Plant 2 feet (60 cm) apart to make a hedge.
  • Culinary Uses
  • Great for making marmalade.
  • Makes nice juice rich in Vitamin C.
  • Medicinal Uses
  • Can be used to treat haemorrhoids, conjunctivitis, colds and constipation.
  • Can be used as a laxative and diuretic.
  • The thorns are used to treat toothache.
  • Can be used to treat allergic inflammation.
