RHS Award of Garden Merit

Description

This much sought after fruit, botanically known as Eriobotrya japonica (the inference being it is actually Japanese) makes a handsome garden tree with its large attractive leaf form.

Also known as Japanese Medlar, Japanese plum or Chinese plum. Orginiated from China and is a member of the rosaceae family.

Loquats usually flower in Autumn and fruits in the Spring, so in order for the tree to fruit it may be necessary to protect the blossom from the frost during the Winter months.

  • Self fertile.
  • Likes a sunny position.
  • Prefers free draining fertile soil.
  • Evergreen in habit.
  • In our experience it is hardy.
  • Golden orange fruits (about the size of very big cherries or apricots) set in clusters.
  • Loquats taste is a bit like a mix of peach, citrus and mild mango.
  • Scented yellowy flowers.
  • Can reach 16 - 33 feet (5 – 10 metres) however they are often smaller only reaching about 10 –13 feet (3 – 4 metres).
  • An average tree can produce approximately 110lb (50 kg) of fruit given good conditions.
  • Culinary Uses
  • Good for making pies or tarts.
  • Excellent for making jam or jelly.
  • Can be used to make wine.
  • Medicinal Uses
  • Can be used to soothe sore throats.
  • Can aid digestive problems.
