Mint Plant - Red Mint

Mentha x smithiana syn. M.rubra

Red Mint has attractive green leaves and stems, tinged with red, and pretty mauve flowers. It has a strong fruity spearmint smell.

  • Hardy perennial.
  • Good culinary mint.
  • Goes especially well with peas.
  • Very attractive variety.

Red Mint has a strong fruity spearmint smell. It is an attractive mint with oval mid-green leaves tinged with berry red and reddish stems, along with dense whorls of mauve flowers, very attractive.  It is a particularly good culinary mint which is easy to grow and native to Europe.

The herbalist John Gerard described mint as having a smell that "rejoyceth the heart of man".  This is very true of Red Mint.

Recognised to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.

  • Hardy Perennial.
  • Prefers moist, well-drained soil.
  • Likes partial shade but also tolerates full sun.
  • Reaches a height of 18" (45 cms).
  • Can be invasive so grow in containers for best results.
  • Good culinary mint.
  • Attractive to pollinating insects.
  • Culinary Uses
  • Excellent accompaniment to lamb and potato dishes, especially in mint sauce.
  • Goes especially well with peas.
  • Good in yoghurt dishes.
  • Can be chopped into fruit salad.
  • Can be infused and used to make herbal tea.
  • Crystallize as decoration for sweets.
  • Other Uses
  • Can be grown near roses to deter aphids.
  • Scattered leaves can deter mice.
  • Can be used in pot pourri.
