Description

A bright red fruit and flesh which has a sweet-and-our flavour containing good sources of Vitamin A, B and C.

The leaves are a vibrant dark green with white perfumed flowers (the fragrance intensifies at night) and the branches have spines. The red fruits are tapered at one end

Originally from South Africa, this is now more widely grown and often called Num-Num, Karonda, Corinda, Amathungulu, umThungulu oBomvu or noem-noem.

Please note that whilst the fruits are edible, the stems and leaves are thought not to be (and contain a white milky sap which may be mildly toxic).  The Natal plum is a member of the Dogbane / Apocynaceae family.

Makes a good hedging plant in warmer climates.

  • Is salt-air tolerant.
  • Adult plants are cold-tolerant to -5°C (young plants require more heat).
  • Evergreen.
  • Fruits ready to eat in the autumn.
  • Requires well-drained soil.
  • Likes a sunny position.
  • Drought-tolerant.
  • Can reach 10 feet (3 metres) tall.
