November Already - Oops!
September ended for us with a fantastic Chilli Day here at the nursery - over 20 craft stalls and several thousand visitors. And then we sailed to warmer climbs for a few weeks....
On our return we were straight back into one of favourite jobs of the year - judging our Annual School Pumpkin Competition. What a fabulous year it has been for Pumpkins and this was born out by the size and quantity that the children managed to grow - and the number we had to judge! The overall winning school this year was Brabourne Primary for managing the greatest fruit / plant ratio. Well done!
And then just when we thought we would get a week to catch up on jobs the storm came! We recorded wind speeds of 86.7 mph - before the grape vine got tangled up in our anemometer! Things could have been worse but, never the less, we still lost a week of repairing broken glass, re-fixing gutters and even having to jack our main greenhouse up to put it back on the block wall.
So that's where October our went, and now we are in November.
September and October have been mild which means leaf fall is a little bit late this year which means we're also a bit late with lifting our fruit and hedging; unlike many suppliers, we prefer to see the leaves at least fade to yellow before lifting - working with nature rather than pushing it! But the leaves have turned and so over the next few weeks everything will be out of the ground and available.
So now is the time to plan your Autumn and Winter plantings. The sooner your plants are ordered the sooner you will have them and be able to get them in; another job done before Winter really kicks in!
For many the Autumn signals the 'end of the season' but in reality it isn't - its just a time when we change what we are eating fresh from the garden. Surely the first Parsnip or Jerusalem Artichoke of the year is just as exciting as the first Asparagus or Sweetcorn?
