Relax - The Harvest Is In!
The last few weeks of September and the first week or so of October sees the last of the Summer's crops being lifted or picked, and Schools across the Country will be having their Harvest Festivals - celebrating the traditional end of the harvest for the farming community and giving thanks for what has been grown.
So, once all the tidying up is done, is October the most relaxing month in the garden? With the Indian Summer we've had the last week or so of September and now into October its certainly not been relaxing on the watering front - but no doubt it will soon be cold, Wet, foggy and windy! Of course when the weather does 'turn' it won't be the best gardening weather - but perfect for pickling, preserving and bottling; and at the same time to take stock - be proud of what has been achieved and make plans for the future.
Here on the nursery we are preparing to start our Autumn liftings (and accept the inevitable that it will rain every day we lift - chocolate soup here we come!!). You should be planning where to plant and preparing the areas in readiness; Autumn and early Winter is the perfect time for planting bare root fruit for several reasons, as the still warm soil (especially this year as it is so mild) encourages the roots of trees, bushes and canes to start to grow - making establishment all the more quicker come the Spring. And come next Summer that early planting will pay off even further as that greater rooting out will mean less need for watering (but don't forget it completely).
There is also still plenty that can be planted now so have a look through our vegetable plants section for some inspiration - if its marked as 'Buy' its a great time for planting - we wouldn't have it for sale otherwise!. Now is also the perfect time for filling those hungry gaps in your flower borders, and the still warm soil will ensure the plants establish well before the onset of Winter. So spend a little time looking through our Pretty Perennials section.
So perhaps October isn't such a relaxing month for the gardener after all - it certainly isn't for us!
Despite being so busy, the end of October sees one of our most important and enjoyable jobs of the year - judging our annual School Pumpkin Competition! And so we will squeeze in a week or so of visiting Schools, measuring pumpkins and awarding spooky Halloween prizes. Best of all we will hopefully hear of all the pleasure and fun the children have had growing their Pumpkins and learning the joys of 'growing their own' without even realising they were learning - because, according to a young chap we spoke to last year, "growing plants is easy, all they need is sun - sun and love"!
