Our Feedback
Hi, I bought an electric fence from you about 2 years ago and I have been meaning to contact you in praise of it. The electric fence is, without doubt, the best thing I've ever bought for my pond. It is extremely easy to install and since doing so I have not lost a single fish to a heron! I just want to say thankyou for such a brilliant product!

Sage Plant - Purple Sage

Awaiting Image

Salvia officinalis 'Purpurascens'

  • Just as useful as its green cousin!
  • Juvenile foliage and stems are a rich purple-red, bringing a striking splash of colour to the herb garden.
  • Purple-blue flowers in summer.
  • Perennial.
  • An essential of both the herb garden and kitchen alike!
  • Avoid planting in close proximity to Rosemary. Rosemary and Sage do not 'get on' and the Sage will at best struggle, at worst die off!

Supplied as a pot grown plant grown in a 7cm pot.

Pollinator FriendlyRHS Award of Garden Merit

The young stems and foliage of Purple Sage are purple in colour and turn grey-green as they grow older. In Summer it produces purple-blue flowers. The leaves are slightly larger than those of common sage and have a marginally spicier flavour. All parts of the plant are strongly aromatic. Like its green relation, Purple Sage has many culinary and medicinal uses.

Throughout history sage has been thought to prolong life and good health. Salvia comes from the Latin 'salvare' - to heal. John Gerard the English herbalist describes sage  as being 'singularly good for the head and brain, it quickeneth the senses and memory'.

Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.

  • Perennial.
  • Evergreen.
  • Grows to approximately 2 feet (60 cm) tall.
  • Avoid planting in close proximity to Rosemary. Rosemary and Sage do not 'get on' and the Sage will at best struggle, at worst die off!
  • Thrives in a sunny position sheltered from the wind.
  • Good tolerance of dry soil conditions.
  • Culinary Uses
  • Good for stuffing pork and chicken.
  • Perfect for the Italian classic of Sage butter sauce.
  • Can be used in salads.
  • Used for making sage vinegar.
  • Good in stews and soup.

  • Medicinal Uses
  • Excellent for helping digestion of fatty foods.

  • The seeds can be infused in water to remove foreign matter from your eyes.
  • Can soothe tired muscles.
  • Can be used as a blood tonic.
  • Suppresses sweating (so can be useful for hot flushes during menopause).
  • Will help strengthen your nervous system.
  • Can help soothe coughs, colds and rheumatism.
  • Can be used to help insect bites and skin infections.
  • Can improve your memory!
  • Other Uses
