Our Feedback
Dear Victoriana Team, After a long wait my Samphire plants have finally arrived and I am so impressed I immediately wanted to order some more. Oh and by the way, thank you for packing all of your plants so well. Even though it is quite frustrating to sieve through all the shredded newspaper and then trying to dispose of it with bits blowing all over the place(especially with bigger plants), your system really works and seems to be the best way of protecting the plants. I have had some bad experience with other garden centres before and actually vowed never to buy plants online again, yet you have really managed to convince me that it can be quite safe. Thank you very much.

Description

Whilst it is thought this plant originated in North America it has been documented as being grown in Europe for many years.

You grow and eat this as you would Spinach. But the real fun and interest comes from the fruits that develop between the leaf axils; these swell to the size of a woodland strawberry - and once they have deepened in colour to a rich red are gorgeously sweet.

  • Plant out 10" (25 cm) apart in rows 18" (45 cm) apart.
  • Grows to around 2 feet (60 cm) tall.
  • Usually grown as an annual it can overwinter if weather is not too severe as it is perennial in habit.
  • Whilst the leaves can be eaten raw, they should be eaten in moderation as they contain oxalates - which are destroyed by cooking as with Spinach (which also contains oxalates).
