Summer Fruiting Raspberries

Because summer-fruiting (floricane) raspberries produce fruit on year-old wood, you’ll need to wait at least one growing season before you can enjoy those succulently juicy raspberries from your raspberry canes. But the wait is certainly worth it, especially since our summer-fruiting raspberry canes have been specially selected to offer the very best-tasting fruits. More...

Summer-fruiting raspberries offer the earliest pickings of raspberries during the growing season, from July through to August. So if you’re always keen to get cooking, preserving or perhaps just really look forward to the prospect of enjoying those juicy fruits straight from your own home-grown raspberry bushes, then it’s definitely worth investing in a few summer-fruiting raspberries.

But it’s also worth considering that with summer-fruiting raspberry plants, you may have to wait until the following growing season after planting to enjoy your first full yield of fresh pickings. That’s because summer-fruiting (floricane) varieties of raspberry canes will only fruit on first-year wood. As such, pruning summer-fruiting raspberry canes takes a little more care than with autumn-fruiting varieties – cut down only the canes that have fruited to around 6” above ground level, and remove any weaker-looking new shoots. Tie in your remaining raspberry canes to support wires as they grow throughout the rest of the season, pruning out any ‘die back’ in the following March.

For more in-depth information about planting and pruning your summer-fruiting raspberry canes, check out our Planting & Pruning Raspberries guide which features alongside each raspberry plant product in our listings. With each order of our bare root raspberry canes, you will also receive a copy of this free guide to help you grow and maintain the healthiest plants.

We have taken the time to choose what we believe to be a selection of the best-tasting summer-fruiting raspberry plants on offer. Our raspberry canes are delivered as bare root plants direct from our nursery in Kent, pruned and ready to plant. We recommend that you plant your raspberry canes in a sunny position, where the soil is moist but free-draining. Mulching with organic matter such as well-rotted manure (fresh manure will burn and damage any tender new roots) or bark chippings will help the soil to retain vital moisture to keep the plant healthy and productive.
