Description

This is the sweet violet of romance! with it's delightful purple/red flowers and evergreen, heart shaped leaves it really is quite stunning.

Sweet Violet 'Rubra' makes a fantastic ground cover and can be good at helping erosion of the soil. It will grow well in shade and part sunny positions and flowers in Spring and sometimes again in the Autumn.

These plants make for a good cut flower and pollinating insects love them and although a native of Eastern North America grows well in the UK, particularly if your are wanting to naturalise woodland areas.

  • Hardy, perennial.
  • Flowers Spring and sometimes August to October.
  • Grow to approximately 6" (15 cm) high.
  • Thrives in shade but will tolerate a full sun position.
  • Likes a rich soil.
  • Plant 10" (25 cm) apart.
  • This plant will spread up to 24" (61 cm).
  • Culinary Uses
  • Wonderful for crystallising and using for cake decorations.
  • Edible flowers.
  • Medicinal Uses
  • Used in India to treat sore throats and tonsilitis.
  • Other Uses
  • Used in perfumes.
  • Cut flowers.
