Description

Already well-known to gardeners in North and South American, under a variety of names, such as Texas Tarragon, Mexican Mint Marigold, and Sweet Mace, Mexican Tarragon is now becoming a firm favourite in the UK.

As easy to grow as Russian Tarragon but with a flavour akin to that of French Tarragon, this easy-going plant more than earns its place in any herb garden. A native of Guatemala and Mexico, it copes well with heat, is drought-tolerant, and happiest in full sunshine, its lovely yellow marigold-like flowers brightening up the Summer garden.

  • Half-hardy perennial.
  • Easy to grow, like Russian Tarragon, with a taste as good as French Tarragon.
  • Reaches a height of 2-3 ft tall 60-90 cm), with a spread of 2-3 ft (60-90 cm).
  • Plant 3 ft apart.
  • Likes well-drained soil; roots will rot if soil is waterlogged.
  • Drought-tolerant but performs better if watered regularly once top inch of soil is dry.
  • Prefers full sunlight but will tolerate partial shade.
  • Mexican Tarragon dies down in the winter and comes back from the root.
  • In warmer regions, the plant does not die down; if so keep well trimmed.
  • Will spread by layering if branches touch the ground; also self-seeds.
  • Also grows happily in a container.

Culinary Uses

  • Use exactly as you would French Tarragon but add at the end of cooking as the leaves break down more easily.
  • Mexican Tarragon has a sweet, slightly anise flavour similar to that of French Tarragon.
  • Harvest regularly through the growing season.
