Description

This truly is the organic gardener, smallholder and farmer's salvation - a natural method of soil sterilisation, even controlling leather jackets, vine weevil and all harmful soil pests as well as reducing weed seeds. A completely safe, all organic method of soil fumigation without recourse to chemicals of any kind, furthermore this principle will also provide you with a green manure crop.

Sown and grown as you would a conventional green manure crop you simply chop the plant tops down shortly before they set seed and incorporate this into the soil to release a natural soil fumigant gas.

Grown well BioSterilant Mustard will reach 6½ feet (2 metres) tall and produce 50-70 tonnes of green biomass per acre.

Will control:

  • Weed seeds.
  • Suppress root rot Rhizoctonia, Pythium, Fusarium and Sclerotinia.
  • Slugs.
  • Snails.
  • Wire worm.
  • Leather Jackets.
  • Vine weevil larvae.
  • Cut worm.

This is a particular variety of Mustard and should not be confused with conventional salad mustard.

At the present time the only alternative is the chemical Methyl Bromide which is to be banned as this is highly toxic and of course non-organic.

Sowing:

  • From April to the beginning of September is the best time for sowing outside.
  • October sowing will produce young plants which can be over-Wintered in the fields.
  • Can be used for greenhouse or poly tunnel soil beds.
  • It can be drilled, broadcoast sown or harrowed/cultivated into a depth of 5-10mm over large areas (or mixed in a bucket with fine sand or soil and broadcoast sown for smaller areas).
  • A nitrogen plant food is recommended at sowing time (as this plant is a gross feeder) at a rate of 132 pounds (60 kg) per acre.
  • It is preferable to roll the ground after sowing.
  • Irrigation is essential for quick germination and growth during dry spells.
  • Spring and Summer sowing will ensure a 60-90 day crop.

Harvesting:

  • Cut when at the advanced flowering stage but BEFORE the seed is set.
  • Trash the plants into the ground within an hour of cutting, ideally with a rotavator on a wet day (this maximises the release of gas that will be generated in the soil and to maximise hydrolysis reaction with the soil).
  • Cover with black polythene (this helps to seal and maximise it's effect).
  • Leave for 21 days before lightly cultivating for your next crop - we suggest you do a trial sowing of a few radish to ensure your soil is free of any residual issothiocyanate gas.
  • It may be necessary to make a secondary sowing in badly contaminated soils.
  • Please note that we will accept no liability for this seed, it has been successfully grown over thousands of acres, but we will not be held liable for non-resultant sowings or plantings.
