Description

This really is a lovely little plant that is perfect for ground cover.

When crushed the foliage releases an extremely strong scent of peppermint; plant this so it overflows onto a path and when crushed underfoot the scent is amazing. Of course, you could plant a whole lawn of this, should you wish.

Semi-evergreen in habit, with small pale green leaves; atop this, pale lavender-blue flowers appear sporadically over the summer months. Can reach a height of approximately 9" (23 cm) but can be kept trimmed and/or walked on or for ground cover.

This is also an excellent plant for areas where ants are troublesome as they hate the scent.

Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.

  • Plant 6" x 6" (15 x 15 cm) apart - that's 36 plants per square metre to metric people.
  • Thrives in a rich soil.
  • Happy in most aspects from full sun to partial shade.
  • Ensure weed growth is kept under control until the lawn is well established.
  • Will take light to moderate foot traffic.
  • Not suitable for areas where dogs may foul as their mess will kill it where it falls!
  • Needs to be 'walked' on to encourage spreading.
  • May require some trimming/cutting.
  • Semi-evergreen.
  • Culinary Uses
  • Can be used sparingly in soups and stuffings.
  • Medicinal Uses
  • Can be used to settle upset stomachs and flatulence (see disclaimer).
  • Can be used to treat cold, flu and stomach cramps (see disclaimer).
  • Can induce sweating (see disclaimer).
  • Can be used as a treatment for smallpox and tuberculosis (see disclaimer).
  • Other Uses
  • Can be use to deter ants and fleas (please use with extra care indoors as it is toxic).
