Pollinator Friendly

These were first grown by the late Eric Shirley in the 1940's at his home and allotment in Isleworth, Middlesex. Clearly these hold a great deal of nostalgia for us!

They are renowned for both their perfume and exhibition quality blooms; see (and smell) our trials here on the nursery every Summer.

Perfect for growing on trellis, arbours and arches, these really do make a fabulous show in any garden - and provide a 'constant' supply of flower for the home; in fact the more you pick them the more they will continue to flower.

Our blend is from 40 distinct named varieties in a grand mixture including varieties such as Air Warden, Andrea Robertson, Blackcurrant Mousse, Blue Danube, Bristol, Brook Hall, Charlie's Angel, Evening Glow, Firebrand, Flagship, Kelvedon Beauty, Mrs R. Bolton, Nanette Newman, Noel Sutton, Pluto, Red Ace, Red Arrow, R.A.F., Rosy Frills, Rouge Parfum, Shirley Pink, Southbourne, Swan Lake, White Frills and Winston Churchill.

Recognised to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects.

  • Flower June - September.
  • Grow to approximately 8 feet (2.4 metres) tall with suitable support.
  • Thrive in full sun and a rich moist soil.
  • Plant 6" - 9" (15 - 23 cm) apart.
  • Pick flowers frequently (and before they set seed) to prolong flowering.
  • Earlier blooms can be produced by growing under protection.
  • Under no circumstances should the seed or seed pods (which look similar to edible garden peas) be eaten as they are poisonous.
