This Product is Available Now. Supplied as a packet of approximately 20 seeds. Re-selected and developed by our friends at the Chilli Pepper Institute of New Mexico State University (CPI), this is a modern twist on an old favourite.
Big Jim has been around for some considerable time (since 1975), and the fruits are noted in the Guinness Book Of Records as the largest pods ever grown (13½" long); however it had been noticed that the flavour and heat of the variety had started to 'fall off' as the trueness to type deteriorated - and so the CPI set about sourcing the original seed held in liquid nitrogen at the US Department of Agriculture's Seed Storage Lab and then re-selecting from that to get the best size, flavour and heat possible - along with good disease resistance.
The result was a plant that produces pods usually around 7" (17.5 cm) long and 2" (5 cm) in diameter, and sometimes longer (so as big as an Italian sweet long pepper). The fruits start of green and mature to a rich red. The flavour is sublime with a mild heat level; they are fantastic for roasting or smoking and preserving in oil - and the ultimate variety for making chilli rellenos.
Growing to around 2 - 3 feet (60 - 90 cm) tall with a spread of 18" (45 cm) the plants are heavy croppers with 30 fruits per plant not being unusual.
