Description

Our own carefully reselected strain of onion that virtually guarantees a bumper crop of huge onions. We grow these every year here on the nursery – and every year get much admiration from our visitors for their size and uniformity.

The reality is that these are not hard to grow, and large onions around 6lbs (2.7 Kg) are not at all unusual.

But more important than size is flavour, and in our opinion these onions really do have one of the best flavours around. Probably not quite mild enough for most people to eat raw but they cook exceptionally well, and caramelise beautifully.

What's also surprising (for such a large onion) is that they store exceptionally well – usually into February and beyond.

  • Sow late December-early May thinly onto the surface of lightly firmed trays of fresh seed compost.
  • Cover with a thin layer of fresh seed compost to just cover and lightly firm down.
  • Water the trays thoroughly and germinate under protection at a temperature of 65–68°F (18–20°C).
  • Once germinated grow on at 50F+ (10C+). Set out 9” (23cm) apart in rows 15” (38cm) apart.

Recommended by the RHS to be an excellent attractant and nectar source for bees and other beneficial insects if allowed to 'go over' and flower (so if you have room leave any plants in that have gone too far rather than pulling them out straight away).
