Supplied as a packet of approximately 100 seeds.

This variety is more that 150 years old and the American parentage goes back to the 1700s No genetically modified nonsense with us!

Can be sown and grown at any time! This black seeded variety is extremely winter hardy even taking frost and snow down to 23°F (-5°C) - yet flavour is not lost.

We believe this to have great UK commercial potential. In a 2006 test trial of lettuce varieties, to our very pleasant surprise, the Daily Telegraph newspaper rated this as the best flavoured lettuce in the UK.

Has performed well in poor soil, grow bags and even in the shade!

For Early Crops
Sow under protection in seed trays January to March and lightly cover seed.
Prick out (transplant) into modules or small pots when large enough to handle and grow on under protection.
Plant outside after fear of frost, setting out 14" (35 cm) apart in rows 18" (45 cm).

For Main Season Crops
Sow thinly in ½" (1 cm) deep drills 18" (45 cm) apart.
Thin out to one plant per 14" (35 cm) when large enough to handle (eat the thinnings of course!).

For Later Crops
Sow October and transplant to protected growing - cloches, greenhouse or similar - for harvesting in early Spring.

Top Tips
Sow every 2 - 3 weeks to ensure a succession of lettuces throughout the Summer and early Autumn.
Sowings between September and March are best done under protection.
Through the late Autumn and over-winter plants can still be planted outside, though will mature quicker if grown under protection.

Hello Serena - Thanks you SO much for the greengage tree which arrived today.
