A Change In The Weather

Finally the heat and humidity of July has been broken by cooler temperatures at the beginning of August, along with seeing some welcome rain. What hasn't been quite so welcome is the wind! It's easy to say gardeners are never happy with the weather, sometimes that unhappiness is more than justified!

But looking on the positive side (gardeners are also good at that too!) the warm July means crops are well advanced and the slow start of April and May has long been forgotten.

This year has found us in the strange position of our outdoor Sweetcorn being ready at the same time as our polytunnel crop - and similarly we've had no struggle in having all out tomatoes ripe for Tomato Day on the 16th of August! The first of this year's Chilli crop are also ripe (and have got more than a little heat) - and of course the Courgettes and Summer Squash have already beaten us into submission.

Production wise, August is a quieter month for us - as we produce small batches of vegetable plants for later plantings - and start turning our attention to new perennials for next year. S not only a change in the weather for us, but also a chance to slow just a little for a few weeks...
