A Long Hot Summer?!

A long hot Summer - or it has been this year so far! In our last little update we moaned about how the cold Winter and Spring, and the low light levels had made for a really tricky growing season - but then July has taken that to another level. In honesty this is the first year we have had to stop propagation and production of young plants due to the extreme temperatures. If this is the way future years are going to go we have some serious planning to do!

But on a more positive side we have made it through - and that is sometimes what horticulture and growing your own is about - coping! For all of us it is going to be a year of mixed blessings - bumper crops of Tomatoes, Chillies (well on their way!) and Sweetcorn (which are early) - whilst our Brassicas and some other 'leaves' have just burnt up.

We're more than a bit behind (and messy) here at the nursery, so we'd ask callers to 'take us as you find us'. Keeping the plants alive and getting the orders out the door has been more than a struggle - and with outside temperatures bouncing around the mid 30's greenhouse and polytunnel temperatures have hit the early 40's. Safe to say we have all gone home more than a bit tired each day - and on one day were down to just 25% of our workforce due to heat!

But the weather has broken for the moment (think it is on its way back!) and so we get a few moments to start to catch up and claw back to where we should be.

Challenging year? It has been so far!

Be sure to follow all our antics at the nursery on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or Pinterest for daily updates and general banter posted with a grin.

Keep Cool!!
