A Welcome Cold Snap
So when is the first day of Spring? Well traditionally it's the 21st of March, but to many gardeners Spring starts when they can finally get out into the garden after Winter. Here in Challock we haven't had our Winter yet, and there have been many days in January when you could have thought it was mid Spring - even our Bluebells have decided to waken! So will we get a proper Winter or not? Certainly the current cold snap is very welcome and will help persuade Nature its not quite time for everything to wake up.
But we shouldn't moan; the open January has meant we've been able to get ahead on all sorts of outside jobs - and if we do get a severe spell we know it won't last for as long (hopefully!).
Here on the nursery a good proportion of the vegetable garden is dug and manured and soon we hope to start planning and planting our new orchard area. If all goes to plan those new plantings will sit patiently and perfectly still in the ground - waiting for those at first unperceivable (to us) rises in ground temperature when adventitious root growth will start making for quicker and stronger establishment later - and come the Summer that early planting will pay off even further as that greater rooting out will mean less need for watering (but we wont forget completely). If you are contemplating planting fruit trees or soft fruits now really is the perfect time to plant.
In our 'prop' area seed sowing and propagation is also now well underway - we haven't run out of space but it wont be long! Time also for you to be planning your sowings, placing your seed orders and getting your early crops underway.
When the sun shines you can feel a 'little sniff' of heat now, the days are getting longer (even our ducks have started laying) so it really is time to get out into the garden - if you don't you'll be behind before you know it!
